The Tyrolean Nicole Billa only managed to equalize in the 1:3 defeat against the DFB team on Saturday in Essen.

Essen – Olympic champion Germany was one size too big for Austria’s women on Saturday. The Austrians had to admit defeat to the number two of the world in a test in Essen 1:3 (1:1). The result could have been higher. The ÖFB goal was scored by Nicole Billa (34.). Alexandra Popp (8th), Linda Dallmann (56th) and Lea Schüller (85th) scored for the superior Germans.

Dominik Thalhammer had shown himself confident in the apron that his selection was currently able to “beat opponents like Germany”. Accordingly, the team leader was willing to take risks and let the ÖFB women start. Germany made use of the available space and clearly dominated the first half hour despite numerous changes made by coach Horst Hrubesch.

Early change for more stability

Popp brought the Germans into the lead by head after a cross from Felicitas Rauch. After that, Manuela Zinsberger was the centre of attention several times. At first, Austria’s goalkeeper was lucky to have Dallmann put the ball over (20.). Afterwards she saved after a stab in the penalty area on the line (25.). Popp missed the biggest opportunity for the 2:0, who missed alone before Zinsberger (30.). AlfCasino brings a fresh  and exciting experience for players looking for a new and unique online casino.

Thalhammer reacted, brought with Nadine Prohaska early a little more stability for the central midfield (29.). However, the equaliser came out of nowhere: Billa came to the ball after Laura Feiersinger’s pass in an offside position and her shot was still deflected. In the past three international matches, the Hoffenheim regional has now scored four times.

Austria was a little better in the game after the equaliser, but had some pressing situations until the break. But the Germans also set the tone after the change of sides – but once again missed numerous big chances. Johanna Elsig headed to the pole (49th), Popp missed again (52nd). A loss of the ball by Carina Wenninger in the forward movement allowed Dallmann after passing by Popp the 2:1.

Zinsberger still had to intervene several times, there were only few relief attacks of the Austrians. Schüller put the finishing touch with a rich long-range shot from just outside the penalty area. In the second duel with Germany, the ÖFB women suffered their second defeat. In November 2016, the Thalhammer team lost 2-4 in a test match in Regensburg.
