Salzburg pots of luck

Dietmar Kühbauer celebrated his first victory as a Rapid Trainer, while Salzburg, the champions, will be nine points ahead in the international break.

Sturm – Salzburg 1:2

Defending champion Salzburg has also won the tenth match of the Bundesliga season and further expanded his record series. On Sunday, a strongly changed “bull eleven” celebrated a 2:1 (1:1) victory at the top of the table with runners-up Sturm Graz and increased their lead to nine points.

Fredrik Gulbrandsen (28th) brought the visitors, who had been far superior before the break, into the lead, but the unexpected follow-up goal by Peter Zulj (43rd) provided suspense again. Despite Stefan Lainer’s (53rd) new lead, Salzburg had to be happy to have scored three points again. Sturm was not rewarded for the increase in performance, conceded the second defeat in the last three games. The Styrians are still sixth.

Marco Rose showed up in front of 11,147 spectators in the Merkur-Arena with a completely changed starting eleven, in which only four players of the 3:1-Gala stood against Celtic Glasgow. In addition to Goalie Cican Stankovic, Jasper Van der Werff, Zlatko Junuzovic, Enock Mwepu, Patson Daka, Smail Prevljak and Fredrik Gulbrandsen also moved into the 4-3-3 formation. Sturm coach Heiko Vogel bet on a three-legged chain and left all four strikers on the bench with Markus Punk, Philipp Hosiner, Philipp Grozurek and Emeka Eze.

Salzburg was then also the clearly leading team, which put a lot of pressure on the sides. Gulbrandsen missed two good chances for the time being: First he rolled the ball after a Daka long pass from short distance to the half-empty goal, Goalie Jörg Siebenhandl could intervene (6th). Ten minutes later, the Norwegian was in a good position. At the third attempt, however, he let it “ring”, and after Junuzovic had presented it to him, the playing equipment shot full into the long corner of the cross.

Sturm didn’t get much going in the offensive, apart from an unclean conclusion by Fabian Koch (12th). There was nothing to oppose the high pressing of the Salzburgers, in the attacking actions they showed themselves discouraged and showed too little pass quality. The equalizer just before the break came out of nowhere: After a Daka-Foul just before the penalty area Zulj hit the ball from 18 meters via the inner bar untenable for Stankovic to 1:1 into the meshes. Pots of Luck has a wide range of games to choose from.

The unexpected goal made Stankovic come out of the box more confidently. But it was just into the good initial phase of the “Blackys” that Lainer scored the visitors’ new lead, with his header arc lamp falling into the goal via the not entirely innocent Siebenhandl. Graz kept a cool head, Otar Kiteishvili forced Stankovic from the left to the parade (59th). The game remained open, Vogel strengthened the offensive with Pink (62.) and Eze (73.).

The best chances were also had by Sturm, Koch’s shot just missed the long corner (72nd). At the latest the finish belonged to the landlords. Salzburg wobbled, but had a secure support in Stankovic. The ÖFB-Teamgoalie thwarted two good possibilities of Pink and Zulj (80.), a header Stefan Hierländers from good position missed the goal narrowly (81.). Salzburg’s defensive held up. Shortly before the end, “Joker” Hannes Wolf had the chance to close the bag after a counterattack, but failed at Siebenhandl (90th).

Rapid – Mattersburg 1:0

Rapid defeated SV Mattersburg 1:0 (1:0) on Sunday at the home debut of neotrainer Dietmar Kühbauer. The gold goal from Knasmüllner (11.) brought the Viennese the second home victory of the season. The latter promoted the last three times in a row beaten record champion past the Burgenländer to seventh place in the Bundesliga table.

Kühbauer sent his squad in front of 18,200 spectators with four changes over the 1:3 in the Europa League against the Glasgow Rangers this time in a 4-4-2 formation on the field. One of the newcomers to the starting line-up was Alar in the attack for the battered Berisha.

Rapid took the lead with the first shot on goal. Knasmüllner came by a failed clarification attempt of Kerschbaumer of the guests in the penalty area to the ball, let Gruber get out with a hook and hit via inside rod into the short corner. After that, the game developed into a rather dissipated one with several mistakes on both sides. It was not until the 30th minute that the Hütteldorfers fired their second shot on goal, but Pavlovic’s attempt went well over the goal.

Captain Schwab tried four minutes later, but his deflected shot became an easy prey for Mattersburg-Goalie Kuster. At first, Mattersburg only became dangerous with a free kick from Gruber (39th), who went into the hands of Strebinger. Shortly thereafter, the guests on the opposite side overlooked the run along Alar (40th) in the penalty area. His header was missed after Schwab had given in.
