ÖFB women’s team had to admit defeat to Germany

The Tyrolean Nicole Billa only managed to equalize in the 1:3 defeat against the DFB team on Saturday in Essen.

Essen – Olympic champion Germany was one size too big for Austria’s women on Saturday. The Austrians had to admit defeat to the number two of the world in a test in Essen 1:3 (1:1). The result could have been higher. The ÖFB goal was scored by Nicole Billa (34.). Alexandra Popp (8th), Linda Dallmann (56th) and Lea Schüller (85th) scored for the superior Germans.

Dominik Thalhammer had shown himself confident in the apron that his selection was currently able to „beat opponents like Germany“. Accordingly, the team leader was willing to take risks and let the ÖFB women start. Germany made use of the available space and clearly dominated the first half hour despite numerous changes made by coach Horst Hrubesch.

Early change for more stability

Popp brought the Germans into the lead by head after a cross from Felicitas Rauch. After that, Manuela Zinsberger was the centre of attention several times. At first, Austria’s goalkeeper was lucky to have Dallmann put the ball over (20.). Afterwards she saved after a stab in the penalty area on the line (25.). Popp missed the biggest opportunity for the 2:0, who missed alone before Zinsberger (30.). AlfCasino brings a fresh  and exciting experience for players looking for a new and unique online casino.

Thalhammer reacted, brought with Nadine Prohaska early a little more stability for the central midfield (29.). However, the equaliser came out of nowhere: Billa came to the ball after Laura Feiersinger’s pass in an offside position and her shot was still deflected. In the past three international matches, the Hoffenheim regional has now scored four times.

Austria was a little better in the game after the equaliser, but had some pressing situations until the break. But the Germans also set the tone after the change of sides – but once again missed numerous big chances. Johanna Elsig headed to the pole (49th), Popp missed again (52nd). A loss of the ball by Carina Wenninger in the forward movement allowed Dallmann after passing by Popp the 2:1.

Zinsberger still had to intervene several times, there were only few relief attacks of the Austrians. Schüller put the finishing touch with a rich long-range shot from just outside the penalty area. In the second duel with Germany, the ÖFB women suffered their second defeat. In November 2016, the Thalhammer team lost 2-4 in a test match in Regensburg.

Rapid defeats Mattersburg, Salzburg also wins in Graz

Dietmar Kühbauer celebrated his first victory as a Rapid Trainer, while Salzburg, the champions, will be nine points ahead in the international break.

Sturm – Salzburg 1:2

Defending champion Salzburg has also won the tenth match of the Bundesliga season and further expanded his record series. On Sunday, a strongly changed „bull eleven“ celebrated a 2:1 (1:1) victory at the top of the table with runners-up Sturm Graz and increased their lead to nine points.

Fredrik Gulbrandsen (28th) brought the visitors, who had been far superior before the break, into the lead, but the unexpected follow-up goal by Peter Zulj (43rd) provided suspense again. Despite Stefan Lainer’s (53rd) new lead, Salzburg had to be happy to have scored three points again. Sturm was not rewarded for the increase in performance, conceded the second defeat in the last three games. The Styrians are still sixth.

Marco Rose showed up in front of 11,147 spectators in the Merkur-Arena with a completely changed starting eleven, in which only four players of the 3:1-Gala stood against Celtic Glasgow. In addition to Goalie Cican Stankovic, Jasper Van der Werff, Zlatko Junuzovic, Enock Mwepu, Patson Daka, Smail Prevljak and Fredrik Gulbrandsen also moved into the 4-3-3 formation. Sturm coach Heiko Vogel bet on a three-legged chain and left all four strikers on the bench with Markus Punk, Philipp Hosiner, Philipp Grozurek and Emeka Eze.

Salzburg was then also the clearly leading team, which put a lot of pressure on the sides. Gulbrandsen missed two good chances for the time being: First he rolled the ball after a Daka long pass from short distance to the half-empty goal, Goalie Jörg Siebenhandl could intervene (6th). Ten minutes later, the Norwegian was in a good position. At the third attempt, however, he let it „ring“, and after Junuzovic had presented it to him, the playing equipment shot full into the long corner of the cross.

Sturm didn’t get much going in the offensive, apart from an unclean conclusion by Fabian Koch (12th). There was nothing to oppose the high pressing of the Salzburgers, in the attacking actions they showed themselves discouraged and showed too little pass quality. The equalizer just before the break came out of nowhere: After a Daka-Foul just before the penalty area Zulj hit the ball from 18 meters via the inner bar untenable for Stankovic to 1:1 into the meshes. Pots of Luck has a wide range of games to choose from.

The unexpected goal made Stankovic come out of the box more confidently. But it was just into the good initial phase of the „Blackys“ that Lainer scored the visitors‘ new lead, with his header arc lamp falling into the goal via the not entirely innocent Siebenhandl. Graz kept a cool head, Otar Kiteishvili forced Stankovic from the left to the parade (59th). The game remained open, Vogel strengthened the offensive with Pink (62.) and Eze (73.).

The best chances were also had by Sturm, Koch’s shot just missed the long corner (72nd). At the latest the finish belonged to the landlords. Salzburg wobbled, but had a secure support in Stankovic. The ÖFB-Teamgoalie thwarted two good possibilities of Pink and Zulj (80.), a header Stefan Hierländers from good position missed the goal narrowly (81.). Salzburg’s defensive held up. Shortly before the end, „Joker“ Hannes Wolf had the chance to close the bag after a counterattack, but failed at Siebenhandl (90th).

Rapid – Mattersburg 1:0

Rapid defeated SV Mattersburg 1:0 (1:0) on Sunday at the home debut of neotrainer Dietmar Kühbauer. The gold goal from Knasmüllner (11.) brought the Viennese the second home victory of the season. The latter promoted the last three times in a row beaten record champion past the Burgenländer to seventh place in the Bundesliga table.

Kühbauer sent his squad in front of 18,200 spectators with four changes over the 1:3 in the Europa League against the Glasgow Rangers this time in a 4-4-2 formation on the field. One of the newcomers to the starting line-up was Alar in the attack for the battered Berisha.

Rapid took the lead with the first shot on goal. Knasmüllner came by a failed clarification attempt of Kerschbaumer of the guests in the penalty area to the ball, let Gruber get out with a hook and hit via inside rod into the short corner. After that, the game developed into a rather dissipated one with several mistakes on both sides. It was not until the 30th minute that the Hütteldorfers fired their second shot on goal, but Pavlovic’s attempt went well over the goal.

Captain Schwab tried four minutes later, but his deflected shot became an easy prey for Mattersburg-Goalie Kuster. At first, Mattersburg only became dangerous with a free kick from Gruber (39th), who went into the hands of Strebinger. Shortly thereafter, the guests on the opposite side overlooked the run along Alar (40th) in the penalty area. His header was missed after Schwab had given in.

Daxbacher: „Coach debate is logical and legitimate“

After the disappointing season so far, Wacker coach Karl Daxbacher is eager to bring about a turnaround for the Black Greens and is working on the match plan against the LASK.

Innsbruck – Karl Daxbacher has been in business long enough to know what’s going on. „It’s both logical and legitimate for a Unserie like that to be followed by a trainer discussion.“ As a player with Austria he celebrated seven championship titles, four cup victories, also stood in the European Cup final of the cup winners, and afterwards as a coach he also made a name for himself as an ascent specialist. Anyone who thinks that the 65-year-old is so hard-boiled that the ball leaves him cold is mistaken.

„I still annoy myself the most about defeats. I even need the day after to cool off and come down,“ the 65-year-old admits and immediately adds: „Would be madness if it wasn’t so. Then I would be out of place.“ Outbursts of emotion and blame immediately after the final whistle in the cabin are taboo: „It’s no use. Except that everything just gets worse.“ Nothing is more ephemeral in football than yesterday’s success. Daxbacher has learned to live with it. This is no different in Innsbruck. In May, „Sir Karl“ was celebrated as a hero of promotion, now the coach is under discussion. „I can or must live with that,“ says Daxbacher. The dismissal at Wiener Austria in December 2011 hit him right: „Everyone was still patting me on the back at the 100th anniversary celebrations. In addition, I was ‚only‘ second in the standings with a gap of four points. Meanwhile Austria is eleven points behind after nine laps and nobody is upset anymore“. Check Kingbilly Casino to know more about the site and its bonuses.

Yesterday’s snow – at the moment the situation around the Tivoli is getting worse. So the Wacker coach forges a match plan against the LASK despite worries about injuries, a cracked psyche and permanent cross-country running: „Characterally, the team is hard in order. That’s why a point outnumbered against Mattersburg would have done us so damn good.“ During the week they trained, analysed, tested variants to replace the injured and discussed this and that so that the Linzers could feel „the bite and the hunger“ at the turn. The full program that situations like this currently require at FC Wacker. A challenge that Daxbacher is up to. „Of course, but don’t worry – that’s why I’m certainly not at risk of burnout,“ smiles one, who after decades in the business is already quite hardened, but for whom football still seems to be a matter close to his heart.
